- Review the list of participating organizations well in advance and identify those that interest you. To help you decide, we include a profile of each company in the event program as well as the types and titles of opportunities they’ll be discussing.
- Research organizations and prepare questions. Nothing impresses recruiters more than when students demonstrate knowledge about the organization and opportunities. Take time to peruse their website and social media feeds and jot down questions that can’t be answered with a simple Google search. This simple act demonstrates initiative, curiosity and responsibility, which could ultimately lead to a job offer! Check out our “Sample Questions for Employers” for ideas.
- Join the session 5 minutes before it starts in a quiet environment, where you are unlikely to be distracted or interrupted. We highly recommend using a desktop computer or laptop that has a webcam and microphone. If possible, leave your web cam on throughout the session. Putting a face to the question projects confidence and common courtesy. Please mute your mic unless you are asking a question.
- Show your smiling face and engage! This event presents a great opportunity to practice engaging with employers in a low-risk environment (i.e., versus a job interview). Engaging at virtual events includes turning your webcam on, being attentive, and asking questions. Remember, employers are eager to see their audience vs. presenting to a room full of blank screens. - Attend many sessions and take full advantage of this unique event! This event provides a rare chance to learn a great deal about lots of organizations and opportunities in just a few days! We encourage you to take full advantage of it by attending as many sessions as your schedule allows.
- Ask for help. You’re surrounded by a community of professionals who care deeply about your success, so don’t be afraid to reach out to your favorite instructor, advisor, professional staff, etc. We are here for you!
